Science Fiction Movies Come To Life, Thanks to Custom Alloys
I’ll never forget the day I got a phone call from a man introducing himself as a special effects guy for the X-Men movie. At first, I was rather skeptical. But as Colin Chilvers and I talked, I realized he was legitimate.
As the special effects coordinator for the movie he needed to have one of the characters appear to rise out of liquid metal. In order to achieve this effect, he was looking for an alloy that would be liquid at room temperature. I did some research and realized that a Tin Bismuth alloy could work.
He only needed 100 pounds, and he needed it shipped to him within a week. Could we help? My response: Absolutely.
I forgot to ask how he heard about Sophisticated Alloys, but I assume he found us online. We created our website to include an entire page showing our different vacuum melting furnaces because we knew it could be a determining factor in attracting new clients. Five furnaces give us the ability to provide a cost-effective way to produce custom alloys of a few grams up to 500 pounds.
It turns out he didn’t use the custom alloys we created for the X-Men movie, but used it in another science fiction film. But that doesn’t matter. What does matter is that when Hollywood came knocking we were ready, willing and able to help.
